Carnival illustrates cultural diversity

Fashion reflects culture. That's what the Jember Fashion Carnival
(JFC) sought to endeavor during its gala fashion show last
week (Aug. 6).
The 5th JFC -- themed Anxiety and Spirit of The World -- was a
portrayal of the world's cultural diversity on the 3.6 kilometer-
long main street in downtown Jember, East Java, about 198
kilometers from the provincial capital, Surabaya.
World fashion trends, named Soft Baroque, Mock Snob, Action
Tribes and Magic Circus, were included in the display, which
involved 450 models from local schools and universities.
Bali presented its culture in attire decorated with the
typical leak mask. Other models sported dresses with tropical
forest nuances.
Other flavors were represented in Russian-themed fashion,
while the issue of poverty was also brought up during the show.
"I want people to realize that the theme of poverty has a kind
of attractiveness for fashion, as long as we are keen to strive
to learn," Dinand Fariz, the event organizer, said.
Mysticism also drew audience attention along with themes like
the World Cup.
